More and more, people find jobs in retirement because they like working. It makes them feel alive. There is another reason: there are far more part-time jobs now that require professional skills and that allow easy hours. Retirees look at these jobs that are the kind that appeal to them, and they jump at them. One in five people work in retirement. If you would like to join their ranks, here are some of the kinds of jobs that are open to you.
What kind of job could pay you up to $100 an hour, give you the independence to set your own hours, and put your best skills to work? The job of a project-based consultant could. If you have specialized knowledge of any particular area of expertise, you could probably find some pretty good opportunities. You could work for as little as 10 hours a week or as much as you want. If you have a background in healthcare, computers, management or finance, consulting jobs with major companies could be just the thing for you. The downside is that freelance work requires that you be patient for the money to show up. The flow of work can be erratic too. To find a paying gig, you should probably network with your former colleagues or clients, and join a professional group like LinkedIn. You could also see if there is a local industry group for your area.
Do you find that you have been working an office job for far too long and you would like something where you give back to the community? The job in the healthcare industry could give you the satisfaction of helping people like no other job could. You could especially find work as a patient advocate, a job that pays about $30 an hour. What is a patient advocate? This is a job that requires you to perform in any number of capacities for the patients in a hospital. You could be asked to keep track of all of a patient’s appointments, give advice on and help with health insurance claims and speak to be hospital administration to try to obtaindiscounts on procedures that the patient’s insurance won’t cover. A part-time patient advocate usually works about 30 hours a week depending on how many patients there are. Sometimes, you work in a nursing home;at other times you work for an insurance company or even for the individual himself. To find jobs as patient advocate, you could sign up for a patient advocate course at a local college. If you have experience being a social worker or being a nurse or health insurance worker, you could find that your knowledge of your field can make you really valuable in such a job.

If you have qualifications in a subject that are good enough to allow you to teach, a PhD or a Master’s degree for instance, you could apply for a job as an adjunct professor and make about $30 an hour. You usually teach a course or two per semester and spend about 20 hours a week teaching and preparing to teach. If you really love the subject, this could be a wonderful way to put your knowledge to use.
